Introduction

Six years since our founding, E Pluribus Unum’s commitment to breaking down the barriers that divide us to build a better, more equitable South grows stronger each day. Over 50 Unum Fellows either have or are in the process of implementing ambitious equity-based projects in their communities with the help of our team of policy advisors and learning partners. We have announced two new cohorts of our Unum Academy consisting of Southern college students from 12 of our 13 states. We created a network for leadership, connection, truth, and healing through our Unum Alliance, a group of over 45 community organizations, academic institutions, faith-based groups, and government-affiliated programs engaged in equity work. A multimedia partner series with The Bitter Southerner told the stories and impact of our Unum Fellows’ equity projects. EPU’s policy team released bi-monthly legislative updates, tracking over 2,300 equity-relevant bills brought forth in legislatures across the 13 Southern states. This is just a snapshot of EPU’s success in 2023.

How We Make Change

2023 was another year of strategic growth and impact. Through continued research, polling, and testing we are more certain than ever that our work in leadership, policy and narrative change can create sustainable and positive change across the American South. The stories we tell, the policies we promote, and the leaders who guide us all articulate a clear vision and pathway for an equitable South and ultimately an equitable America.

Where We Make Change

In 2023, we traveled to strategic locations to see and learn firsthand how groups and individuals bridge racial divides in their local communities. EPU connected with policymakers and local officials at the National League of Cities Conference and other Legislative and municipal conferences and events across the South to bring awareness to our work and the policy resources we offer to support the advancement of equity. We also worked with Unum Fellows, Unum Alliance members, and learning partners to host various programs that ranged from educational workshops to community conversations and interviews. Between our visits and the work of our Fellows, we’re creating Progress with Purpose in over 50 communities across the 13 Southern States.
