Carla Powell-Lewis

School Board, Baton Rouge, LA

Carla Powell Lewis is a native and resident of Baton Rouge, LA; a local, state, and nationally acclaimed Social Studies Teacher with over 20 years experience. She is the Immediate Past President of the East Baton Rouge
Parish School Board and current District 3 School Board Representative.

Carla serves on the Executive Board of the Louisiana Council for the Social Studies and has previously served on the Executive Board of the National Council for Social Studies. She is a member of the East Baton
Rouge Branch of the National Association of University Women, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc, Junior League of Baton Rouge, Phi Delta Kappa International, and the National Coalition of 100 Black Women of Metro Baton Rouge .

Carla is the founding ministry leader of Global Truth Outreach Ministries prayer line. Recently, she has launched her own educational consulting firm Spirit of Excellence Learning Systems, where she provides instructional coaching to educators in various districts in the areas of social studies content and state standard implementation, classroom management best practices, HiSet/GED and ACT course support, and citizenship/naturalization exam preparation.

Mrs. Lewis is a graduate of Scotlandville Magnet High School (’97). She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Studies Education, a Master of Education Degree in Administration and Supervision, and several graduate hours in Public Administration all from Southern University.

Carla is married to her wonderful husband, Darryl. She is the mother of one son and the “bonus mom
and grandmother” to four daughters and six grandchildren. Within her passion to serve God and her community, Carla desires to impact positive change by developing productive citizens continually.
