Survey of the South: December 2023

On behalf of E Pluribus Unum, Embold Research conducted in December 20203 our annual Survey of the South  poll among 2,616 registered voters across thirteen states in order to capture the multifaceted economic, political, and social realities of Southern voters.

This research finds Southern voters often have strong informational and personal networks through their families, friends, and local communities, and that these networks often include a diverse array of opinions and backgrounds. However, there exist key differences in the lived experiences and values of Southern voters based on their race or ethnicity, creating stark divides when it comes to who voters trust, what issues they care about, and how they navigate conversations about race. This research uncovers a deeply partisan region, with political beliefs playing an integral role in how Southern voters perceive their communities and themselves.

Survey of the South encapsulates more than statistical data; it represents the lived experiences of individuals navigating a socio-politically complex landscape. The collective concerns raised necessitate nuanced, inclusive approaches by policymakers, community leaders, and civil society to ensure a future where progress includes all groups in America’s evolving South.

As the region moves forward, EPU will continue to  harness the rich tapestry of perspectives revealed by Survey of the South. Embracing inclusive dialogues, creating empathetic policies that address systemic inequities, and focusing on community-driven solutions will be key. The path ahead involves recognizing the region’s complex historical legacies and current realities and committing to actionable steps that resonate with the diverse experiences and aspirations of its people.
